Warning Property Owners! BEWARE OF DEED SCAM!

Sussex County Clerk Erma Gormley cautions county residents to beware of organizations that offer to sell them a certified copy of their property deed.

Businesses are soliciting Sussex County property owners to purchase a copy of their deed for $69.50 when most residents more than likely already have a copy of their deed. Further, because these businesses have a return address of Washington, D.C., many residents are misled by the implied importance and official nature of the solicitation, and think they need to purchase the deed from that business as soon as possible.

If you are a property owner and you did not retain a copy of your deed, or you misplaced it, you should know that you can quickly obtain one from your County Clerk’s Office for a fraction of the cost these other businesses are charging.

To find out more about obtaining a certified copy of your deed, call the Sussex County Clerk’s Office at 973-579-0900 or email Clerk Gormley at scclerk@nac.net.
