Recording Services

Real Estate Records

One of the primary responsibilities of the Office of the County Clerk is to handle the filing and recording of all documents affecting real estate ownership and transfer within the County of Sussex, including Deeds, Mortgages, and their related documents, and Federal Tax Liens.

NOTE: In recent years, with the digitization of public records, the Sussex County Clerk's Office has taken steps to redact personal information from its public records (e.g., social security numbers). If, however, you notice that one of our records reveals YOUR personal information, which you would like to remove from public record, please make us aware of the situation by completing and submitting a Redaction Request Form, so that we can redact the information and protect your privacy.

Other Records

The Clerk's Office also keeps a record of business trade names opened in the county, and records certain veteran documents. (See Registration Services for certain licenses kept on file at the Clerk's Office as well, including Notary, Physician's, and Veterans Peddler's licenses.)

Records Room

Our Records Room is open to the public, where all documents are available for public inspection and retrieval. Our deed and mortgage records also are searchable on-line, dating from 1964 forward. Lien and miscellaneous documents are available electronically only from November 20, 2007 forward.

Our Records Room is located on the lower parking level of the Cochran House Professional Bldg, located at 83 Spring St., Suite 204, in the heart of Newton. A records clerk is available at all times to assist you with your document search needs.

If you have any questions, you can reach our office by calling Brian McNeilly, Deputy County Clerk (973)579-0900, or email him at bmcneilly.scclerk@nac.net.
